DIYShould You Try and DIY in Your Small Business?

When you’re just starting out with your small business, the urge is omnipresent to attempt as much as you can yourself. This is not only from a cost standpoint, but also a sense that you can do this. While it’s a smart idea to have a basic grasp on things, there are plenty of items you’ll need help with, and they just don’t make sense to try and learn.

For instance, building a website from the ground up requires a skill set you probably don’t have, and would take some time to learn. Best to hire that out. This isn’t always true. Many things you can and should do. Let’s look at several of the factors that will inform your decision whether to go with DIY or DFY.

What to consider when choosing DIY or DFY

  • Define your own role in your business. What would you rather be doing? Will you dive into all the details, or task that out and adopt a more executive and visionary hat?
  • Really interview yourself as to whether or not you have the skills needed to do what you seek to do, or if it would be better for the most part to hire people who are well-versed in the subject.
  • If you do hire out, seek to get personal recommendations whenever possible, and never pay in full upfront. Schedule payments on a staged delivery basis, to make sure that the work will actually get done and that you won’t get taken for a bundle.
  • Think carefully before choosing to write your own copy, in particular sales copy and emails. These are two areas crucial to your income, and if you don’t know what you’re doing, it will show in your results!
  • Strive to stick to an overall vision for your online presence. This is especially important if you are hiring out a lot of the work, as competing viewpoints can creep in, clouding your original vision. Stay true to your view!

At the end of the day you’ll need to make a decision which style, DIY or DFY, best suits your business. Make sure the decision is one that’s in the best interest of the business!
